Jam is one of those products where the front of the pack and the ingredient list can tell very different stories. “Made with real fruit” is true of almost every jam on the shelf, the question is how much fruit, and how much sugar, sit underneath that claim.
A few things worth checking. Fruit content percentage is often listed and can vary widely between products that look similar on the shelf. Total sugar per serving matters too, jam is never going to be low sugar, but there’s a real range between products.
Preservatives and added colour are also worth a glance, particularly in lower priced jams where fruit content tends to be lower and additives tend to fill the gap.
As with breads, we’re working through individual jam products on the CleanPlate catalogue, and this post will link out to specific scores and comparisons as they go live.
