FSSAI issued a directive on 22 July setting out labelling requirements for coffee-chicory mixtures under the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) First Amendment Regulations, 2025.
Why it matters
Many instant and filter coffees sold in India are blends of coffee and chicory, a roasted root that is cheaper than coffee. Clear labelling helps you see how much of what you are buying is actually coffee.
What to check
Look at the front and the ingredient list for the stated coffee and chicory proportions. A higher chicory share is not unsafe, but you should know what you are paying for.
