Sources and images

Where our label data and pack photos come from, and how to ask for a change.

Label data

Every score is built from what is printed on the pack. We read it from one of these, and each product page says which:

  • photos of the pack, taken from a retailer's listing or by a reader;
  • the brand's own website;
  • a retailer's written listing, when no pack photo shows the panel.

When two sources disagree we hold the product back until we know which is right. Each product page shows the date the label was read. We keep every earlier reading, so we can tell when a recipe changes.

Reference values

Thresholds come from FSSAI, Codex and ICMR-NIN 2020. Read how in how we score.

Pack photos

Most pack photos on CleanPlate come from retailer listings. They are shown only so you can recognise the product we rated, and the pack remains the property of the brand. Where possible we are replacing them with photos we take ourselves, and readers can send photos of packs they own.

Asking for an image to change or go

If you own a photo or a pack design shown here and want it credited, replaced or removed, use the dispute form and say which image and what you want done. We act on a clear request quickly. Removing a photo never removes the rating.

Reader photos

If you send us a photo of a pack, we use it to read the label. We do not publish it without asking you.
