Our take

CleanPlate review

Cold Coffee flavour, but no coffee in the list

Avvatar Performance Whey Protein (Cold Coffee) is a 1 kg tub of whey protein concentrate and alkalised cocoa powder with iodised salt, two sweeteners (acesulfame potassium and sucralose), two stabilisers (INS 413, 416) and sunflower lecithin. One rounded 35 g scoop gives 25 g of protein. The panel is printed per serve and converted here to per 100 g.

CleanPlate scores it [L]BD3. The B for nutrition reflects 71.4 g protein and natural calcium per 100 g. The D for ingredients reflects mostly refined or industrial ingredients (led by whey protein concentrate and alkalized cocoa powder), with additives that cost points: sucralose, acesulfame potassium, tragacanth and karaya gum. The [L] marks a hollow label promise: the coffee named on the pack is not in the ingredient list. The 3 for risk comes mainly from sodium (497 mg per 100 g) and saturated fat (3.71 g per 100 g).

Claims vs reality

What the pack says, checked against the ingredient list and nutrition panel.

  • Product name

    “Cold Coffee”

    Misleading

No coffee, coffee extract or coffee flavouring appears in the ingredient list; the flavour comes from alkalised cocoa and sweeteners.

  • On the pack

    “Sugar-Free”

    Holds

Total sugars are 0 g and no sugar ingredient is listed; two non-sugar sweeteners are used.

  • On the pack

    “Protein 25g”

    Holds

    71.4 g per 100 g in a 35 g scoop is 25 g of protein.

  • On the pack

    “RICH IN BCAA AND EAA”

    Be careful

The side print shows glutamic acid and other essential amino acids, but the BCAA figure is not legible.

A closer look

Does the label add up?

Whey protein concentrate, alkalised cocoa powder, iodised salt, acesulfame potassium (INS 950), sucralose (INS 955), stabilisers (INS 413 and INS 416) and sunflower lecithin (INS 322).

Per 100 g: 391 kcal, 6 g fat of which 3.71 g saturated, 0 g sugar, 71.4 g protein, 497 mg sodium. The ingredient list prints no comma after whey protein concentrate; it is read as two ingredients, whey protein concentrate and alkalised cocoa powder. The panel has no added sugar line, so the label loses 2 points on top of the 8-point hollow-promise deduction. No percentages are given, so the whey and cocoa shares are hand-estimated from the protein balance (whey about 88%, cocoa about 8%). The score is provisional. Trans fat (0.29 g per 100 g) is not counted because whey and cocoa are the only fat sources. INS 416 (karaya gum) is not in the additives catalogue and is scored at 2 points as a thickener. No veg mark and no allergen statement are on the images.

Ingredients to watch

  • GumsWorth watching

Tragacanth (413) and karaya gum (416) cost 2 points each.

  • Protein and calciumFine

71.4 g protein and 429 mg calcium per 100 g, both from the whey.

Common misconceptions

Myth: "Cold Coffee means coffee-flavoured with real coffee"

The list has no coffee at all; the taste is built from cocoa and sweeteners.

Myth: "Sugar-free means additive-free"

Two sweeteners and two gums are listed.
