Our take

CleanPlate review

Zero added sugar, but 73% malted cereal extract

Bournvita Zero Added Sugar is a 500 g drink mix of cereal extract (73%: barley, wheat, millets), soluble corn fibre, cocoa solids, caramel colour, minerals, emulsifiers, a raising agent, vitamins, milk solids, flavours and iodised salt. The panel is printed per 100 g.

CleanPlate scores it [F][L]BB2. The B for nutrition reflects 14 g fibre per 100 g; its 7 g of protein earns no credit because it is under 2.75 g per 100 kcal. The [F] marks that added calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C lift the grade; without them it would be C. The B for ingredients reflects whole or lightly processed ingredients (led by barley, wheat and millets), with additives that cost points: caramel colour, flavouring and mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids. The [L] marks a hollow label promise: the claim "zero added sugar" does not hold: a free-sugar ingredient is listed: cereal extract. The 2 for risk is low: sodium, free sugar and saturated fat are all modest as made (sodium 62.2 mg, free sugar 1.74 g, saturated fat 1.9 g per 100 g).

Claims vs reality

What the pack says, checked against the ingredient list and nutrition panel.

  • On the pack

    “Zero Added Sugar”

    Misleading

Total sugar is 22 g per 100 g, almost all from the 73% cereal extract, which CleanPlate counts as about 19.7 g free sugar; the pack footnote says it contains naturally occurring sugars.

  • On the pack

“2X strength nutrients, add to milk for 2X vitamin D, iron, zinc”

    Be careful

The comparison rests on a footnote and the milk it is added to.

How BB2 breaks down

Each grade is scored on its own. Here are the label numbers behind each one, per 100 g.

Scored on the drink as made: 20 g in 200 ml of toned milk, from the pack's directions. As sold, the powder has 250 mg sodium and 0 g added sugar per 100 g.

Scored on free sugar, sodium, saturated fat and trans fat, each weighed by how strong the evidence of harm is.

[F] Added vitamins or minerals meaningfully lift this product's nutrition grade. Without them it would score lower.

[L] The name or pack claims promise more than the ingredient list delivers. See Claims vs reality.

A closer look

Does the label add up?

Cereal extract 73% (barley, wheat, millets), soluble fibre (corn), cocoa solids, colour (caramel, 150c), minerals, emulsifiers (322, 471), raising agent (500(ii)), vitamins, milk solids, flavours (natural, nature-identical and artificial vanilla) and iodised salt.

Per 100 g: 360 kcal, 1.8 g fat of which 0.9 g saturated, 22 g sugar of which 0 g added, 14 g fibre, 7 g protein, 250 mg sodium. Fibre is 14 g per 100 g, much of it added soluble corn fibre. Scored as made: a 20 g serve in 200 ml toned milk (the pack says add to milk but gives no ml), so the score is provisional (ASMADE_DEFAULT). Atwater energy without fibre is 388 kcal against the declared 360 kcal.
