Our take

CleanPlate review

Protein cold coffee carrying two gums and BHA

Avvatar Classic Cold Coffee lists cow's milk, water, milk protein concentrate, prebiotic inulin and coffee powder, then stabilisers (INS 460, 466, 471, 407, 418), emulsifiers, an antioxidant (BHA), monk fruit and stevia. The pack is a 250 ml single serve and the panel is printed per pack, converted here to per 100 ml.

CleanPlate scores it [F]AC1. The A for nutrition reflects 6.2 g protein and natural calcium per 100 ml. The [F] marks that added isolated fibre lifts the grade; without it it would be B. The C for ingredients reflects a mix of whole and refined ingredients (led by cow's milk, milk protein concentrate and prebiotic inulin), with additives that cost points: carrageenan, carboxymethyl cellulose, BHA and potassium phosphates. The 1 for risk is low: sodium, free sugar and saturated fat are all modest (sodium 70 mg, free sugar 0 g, saturated fat 1 g per 100 ml).

Claims vs reality

What the pack says, checked against the ingredient list and nutrition panel.

  • On the pack

    “15G PROTEIN”

    Holds

    6.2 g per 100 ml is about 15.5 g in the 250 ml pack.

  • On the pack

    “NO ADDED SUGAR”

    Holds

No sugar or sugar syrup is listed; the 4.3 g of sugar per 100 ml is milk's lactose and the sweetness comes from monk fruit and stevia.

  • On the pack

    “CONTAINS NATURAL SWEETENER”

    Partly true

Monk fruit concentrate is plant-derived; steviol glycosides (INS 960) are a purified extract and count as a non-sugar sweetener.

How AC1 breaks down

Each grade is scored on its own. Here are the label numbers behind each one, per 100 ml.

A closer look

Does the label add up?

Cow's milk, water, milk protein concentrate, prebiotic inulin, coffee powder, stabilisers (INS 460(i), 466, 471, 407, 418), emulsifiers (INS 340, 452(i), 331(iii)), iodised salt, monk fruit concentrate, steviol glycosides (INS 960), antioxidant (INS 320) and added coffee flavour.

Per 100 ml: 59.8 kcal, 1.56 g fat of which 1 g saturated, 4.28 g sugar of which 0 g added, 1.92 g fibre, 6.2 g protein, 70 mg sodium. The panel is per 250 ml pack, so values are multiplied by 0.4. Trans fat is printed as under 0.2 g and is stored as missing. The listing gives INS 331(i); the pack reads 331(iii) and the pack was used. Coffee is named but has no percentage.

Ingredients to watch

  • AdditivesConcern

Carrageenan (INS 407) and carboxymethyl cellulose (INS 466) cost 6 points each, with BHA, phosphates and the emulsifiers on top.

  • Added fibreWorth watching

Inulin adds 1.9 g of fibre per 100 ml; the nutrition grade is A with it and B without it.

  • ProteinFine

6.2 g per 100 ml, mostly from milk and milk protein concentrate.

  • Sugar and sodiumFine

No added sugar and 70 mg sodium per 100 ml.

Common misconceptions

Myth: "Natural sweetener means nothing artificial"

The sweeteners are monk fruit concentrate and a purified stevia extract; the stabilisers, emulsifiers and BHA still use up the full 25 additive points in the ingredients grade.

Myth: "15 g protein means a clean drink"

The protein is real, but the list carries two gums that cost 6 points each.

How often, and how

  • Healthy adultsA few times a week
  • ChildrenOccasionally
  • Diabetes or prediabetesFine in moderation

Smarter ways to eat it

Make your own

Cold brew with toned milk gives about 3 g of protein per 100 ml with no additives.

Treat it as a protein shake

One pack is a serve of protein and 150 kcal, not a plain coffee.
