Carrageenan
A seaweed-derived thickener used in dairy drinks and desserts. Food-grade carrageenan is approved, but its effect on the gut is debated.
Carrageenan is extracted from red seaweed and used to thicken and stabilise flavoured milks, ice creams, desserts and plant milks.
What the research says
Expert committees consider food-grade carrageenan safe. Some animal and cell studies have linked it to gut inflammation, and the debate continues.
