Our take

CleanPlate review

Compound coating, caramel sauce and a tartrazine tint

Cream Bell Maxxum Butterscotch Caramel is an 80 ml (65 g) butterscotch flavoured medium fat frozen dessert stick: an inner layer (62%) with caramel sauce (18%), sugar, milk solids and refined palm oil, coloured with tartrazine, and an outer layer (38%) of choco covering with cashew chikki (8%). The pack prints the panel per 65 g serve, converted here to per 100 g.

CleanPlate scores it [R]ED4. The E for nutrition is low: almost no credited protein, fibre or micronutrients per 100 g. The D for ingredients reflects mostly refined or industrial ingredients (led by caramel sauce, sugar and milk solids), with additives that cost points: carrageenan, carboxymethyl cellulose, caramel colour and flavouring. A red flag (Southampton Six x1) cuts the score by 20%. The 4 for risk comes mainly from saturated fat (15.2 g per 100 g) and free sugar (25 g per 100 g).

Claims vs reality

What the pack says, checked against the ingredient list and nutrition panel.

  • On the pack

“Butterscotch flavoured medium fat frozen dessert coated with choco covering”

    Partly true

The covering is vegetable oil, sugar, milk solids and cocoa solids (a compound coating), not chocolate made with cocoa butter.

  • On the pack

“Frozen dessert is made with 8.5% edible vegetable oil”

    Be careful

Refined palm oil is listed and vegetable oil leads the covering; the 8.5% cannot be checked from the list.

A closer look

Does the label add up?

Inner layer (62%): water, caramel sauce (18%: liquid glucose, water, sugar, milk solids, salt, stabilisers, humectant 422, acidity regulator, raising agent, caramel colour 150d, caramel flavour), sugar, milk solids, refined palm oil, maltodextrin, emulsifiers (471, 477), stabilisers (410, 412), tartrazine and butterscotch flavouring. Outer layer (38%): choco covering of vegetable oil, sugar, milk solids, cocoa solids, emulsifier 322 and vanillin, and chikki (8%: cashew nut 4%, sugar, water, glucose, milk solids, salt).

Per 100 g: 362 kcal, 21.4 g fat of which 15.2 g saturated, 31.2 g sugar of which 7.23 g added, 4.62 g protein, 69.8 mg sodium. The only panel is per serve 80 ml (65 g) and is converted by dividing by 0.65; nutrition confidence is medium because of the conversion. The panel's added sugar (7.23 g per 100 g) cannot be right beside 31.2 g of total sugars: milk supplies about 5 g, and the rest is sugar, liquid glucose and syrup-based sauce, so free sugar is estimated at 25 g (Hard Rule 16) and the score is marked provisional (PANEL_CONFLICT); the grade is the same with either figure. The listing shows 294 kcal where its own text and the pack give 362 kcal; the pack is used. Trans fat (0.25 g per 100 g) is not counted because milk solids and palm oil are the fats listed. Vanillin and the caramel and butterscotch flavours are counted once as flavouring.

Ingredients to watch

  • Saturated fatConcern

    15.2 g per 100 g, three times the 5 g high line.

  • TartrazineConcern

Colour 102 is a Southampton Six dye, so the red flag applies.

  • Sugar lineWorth watching

The added sugar printed is far below what the list supports.

  • AdditivesWorth watching

Carrageenan and carboxymethyl cellulose cost 6 points each and caramel IV 4 points.
