Our take

CleanPlate review

A chocolate-coated ice cream with 21 g free sugar

Kwality Wall's Magnum Chocolate Truffle is an ice cream stick: an ice cream base of water, chocolate-flavoured confectionery (19%), milk solids, sugar and glucose syrup, dipped in an outer layer (30.2%) of blended chocolate (15.1%) and a milk compound coating (15.1%) that adds coconut oil. Carrageenan and gums hold it together.

CleanPlate scores it EC4. The E for nutrition is low: almost no credited protein, fibre or micronutrients per 100 g. The C for ingredients reflects mostly refined or industrial ingredients (led by milk solids, sugar and cocoa solids), with additives that cost points: carrageenan, flavouring, locust bean gum and guar gum. The 4 for risk comes mainly from saturated fat (12.9 g per 100 g) and free sugar (21.4 g per 100 g).

Claims vs reality

What the pack says, checked against the ingredient list and nutrition panel.

  • On the pack

    “Made with Belgian chocolate”

    Be careful

Only half of the 30.2% outer layer is blended chocolate; the other half is a milk compound coating with coconut oil. The footnote to the claim is not legible.

  • Product name

    “Chocolate Truffle”

    Be careful

"Truffle" is a style name; chocolate is present as cocoa powder, cocoa solids and cocoa butter in the ice cream and the coating.

  • Product name

    “Ice Cream”

    Be careful

The list shows milk solids and coconut oil but no cream or butter, and the pack does not state milk fat.

A closer look

Does the label add up?

Ice cream 50.8% (water, chocolate-flavoured confectionery 19%, milk solids, sugar, cocoa solids, liquid glucose, mono- and diglycerides, stabilisers INS 410, 412, 407, nature-identical flavouring) and outer layer 30.2% (blended chocolate 15.1% and milk compound coating 15.1%, with sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa solids, milk solids, coconut oil, lecithin and vanillin).

Per 100 g: 322 kcal, 19.8 g fat of which 12.9 g saturated, 26 g sugar of which 21.4 g added, 2.38 g fibre, 4.6 g protein, 71.4 mg sodium. Two panel versions: the ingredient card says per 63 g stick (203 kcal), the pack shots say per 58 g (186 kcal). Per 100 g is almost the same either way (322 and 321 kcal); the 63 g card was converted. Cholesterol is 15.2 mg per 63 g stick. The listing text had left out the milk compound coating.

Ingredients to watch

  • Free sugarConcern

About 21 g per 100 g, mostly from sugar, glucose syrup and the chocolate layers.

  • Saturated fatConcern

    13 g per 100 g; one stick has about 7.4 to 8.1 g, over a third of a day's limit.

  • Carrageenan and gumsWorth watching

Carrageenan costs 6 points; locust bean gum, guar gum and mono- and diglycerides each cost 2.

  • Milk compound coatingWorth watching

Half of the outer layer uses coconut oil next to cocoa butter, so it is not all chocolate.

Common misconceptions

Myth: "Premium ice cream is better for you"

It is richer in cocoa butter and coconut oil, which also means more saturated fat: 13 g per 100 g.

Myth: "One stick is just one serving"

One stick is 58 to 63 g and holds about 15 to 16 g of sugar, close to 4 teaspoons.

Smarter ways to eat it

Share it
