Our take

CleanPlate review

A peanut bar with hydrogenated fat in its coating

RiteBite Peanut Butter 4g Protein Bar is peanuts (18%), a no-added-sugar dark compound (16%) made with maltitol, hydrogenated vegetable oil and cocoa solids, rolled oats (8%), rice and quinoa crisps, maltitol, peanut butter (7%), black currants, high-oleic sunflower oil, fibre (FOS and chicory fibre), glycerine, seeds and added vitamins A, C and E with calcium phosphate.

CleanPlate scores it [F][R]CD2. The C for nutrition is middling: modest protein, fibre and micronutrients per 100 g; its 10.2 g of protein earns no credit because it is under 2.75 g per 100 kcal. The [F] marks that added calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C and isolated fibre lift the grade; without them it would be E. The D for ingredients reflects a mix of whole and refined ingredients (led by peanuts, dark compound no added sugar and whole grain rolled oats), with additives that cost points: guar gum, glycerol and maltitol. A red flag (hydrogenated fat / vanaspati (unqualified)) cuts the score by 40%. The 2 for risk is low: sodium, free sugar and saturated fat are all modest (sodium 119 mg, free sugar 0 g, saturated fat 4.5 g per 100 g).

Claims vs reality

What the pack says, checked against the ingredient list and nutrition panel.

  • On the pack

    “Zero added sugar”

    Holds

The panel has no added-sugar line; "sugar from other ingredients" is 1.3 g a bar, and the word sugar appears only in the compound's name. The sweetener is maltitol (6 g a bar).

  • On the pack

    “No preservatives”

    Holds

No preservative is listed; vitamin C acts as an antioxidant.

  • On the pack

    “Natural ingredients”

    Be careful

The list also has hydrogenated vegetable oil, maltitol, glycerine, added vitamins and calcium phosphate.

How CD2 breaks down

Each grade is scored on its own. Here are the label numbers behind each one, per 100 g.

Scored on free sugar, sodium, saturated fat and trans fat, each weighed by how strong the evidence of harm is.

[F] Added vitamins or minerals meaningfully lift this product's nutrition grade. Without them it would score lower.

[R] Contains an ingredient on our red-flag list (such as a partially hydrogenated oil or a flagged synthetic dye), which cuts the ingredient grade.

A closer look

Does the label add up?

Peanuts 18%, dark compound with no added sugar 16% (maltitol, hydrogenated vegetable oil, cocoa solids, lecithin), cereals (rolled oats 8%, brown rice crisp, quinoa crisp), maltitol, peanut butter 7%, black currants, high-oleic sunflower oil, fructo-oligosaccharide and chicory fibre, glycerine, oat bran, cranberries, pumpkin and flax seeds, lecithin, guar gum, calcium phosphate, salt, citric acid, vitamin C and vitamins A, C, E.

Per 100 g: 510 kcal, 25.5 g fat of which 4.5 g saturated, 3.25 g sugar, 5.75 g fibre, 10.2 g protein, 119 mg sodium. Read from the pack front and two brand cards (no back-of-pack photo). The panel is per 40 g bar and was converted x 2.5. The pack differs from the listing: hydrogenated oil in the compound, fibre 5.75 g and added vitamins and calcium declared, no added-sugar line. "4g protein" is the retailer's title and is not on the pack front, which says "RiteBite Nutrition Bar". Free sugar is 0 g.

Ingredients to watch

  • Hydrogenated oilConcern

Unqualified "hydrogenated" is scored as partially hydrogenated oil: a red flag that cuts the ingredient score by 40%.

  • MaltitolWorth watching

A sugar alcohol used twice (6 g a bar); it costs 2 points and can upset the stomach.

  • FatWorth watching

    25.5 g per 100 g, mostly from peanuts; saturated fat is 4.5 g.

  • Fibre and added nutrientsFine

    5.75 g fibre per 100 g, with vitamins A, C, E and calcium added.

Common misconceptions

Myth: "Zero added sugar means sugar-free"

The bar still has 3.25 g of sugar and 6 g of maltitol per 40 g, and 510 kcal per 100 g.

Myth: "0 g trans fat means no hydrogenated oil"

The panel prints 0 g, but the oil is listed as hydrogenated, so the score treats it as partially hydrogenated until the maker confirms.
