[F] CC4
Our take
CleanPlate reviewReal vegetables, borrowed nutrients, a lot of salt
Yippee Magic Masala is ITC's answer to Maggi: a fried maida noodle cake with a masala mix that carries dehydrated beans, carrot, onion and cabbage. The pack leans on vegetables and on being a source of five nutrients.
CleanPlate scores it [F]CC4. The C for nutrition only holds because calcium, iron, vitamin C and folic acid are added; without them it would be a D, hence the [F]. The C for ingredients reflects maida, palm oil and three phosphate stabilisers. The 4 for risk comes from very high sodium and a large share of saturated fat.
Claims vs reality
What the pack says, checked against the ingredient list and nutrition panel.
- Product namePartly true
“with Added Veggies”
Beans, carrot, onion and cabbage make up 25% of the masala mix, but the pack does not say how much of the whole pack the masala is. Most of what you eat is maida and palm oil.
- On the packBe careful
“Source of 5 essential nutrients”
True on the numbers, but calcium, iron, vitamin C and folic acid come from added minerals, vitamins and calcium carbonate, not from the noodles themselves.
- On the packHolds
“No artificial flavours or colours”
No colour is listed; flavourings are natural and nature-identical, alongside enhancers 627 and 631.
How CC4 breaks down
Each grade is scored on its own. Here are the label numbers behind each one, per 100 g.
Adequate nutrient density
- Protein
- 9 g
- Fibre
- Not declared
- Vitamins and minerals
- 4 declared
- Energy
- 459 kcal
Scored on eight nutrients (protein, fibre, calcium, iron, vitamins A, C, D and zinc), per 100 g and per 100 kcal.
Mixed processing and additives
- Base
- Refined Wheat Flour
- Main fat
- Refined Palm Oil
- Sweeteners
- Sugar, Maltodextrin
- Additives
- 10
- Flagged
- 3 ingredients
Scored on six things: base processing, fat quality, sweeteners, additives, colours and flavours.
High risk
- Added sugar
- 1.6 g
- Sodium
- 1247.1 mg
- Saturated fat
- 10.7 g
- Trans fat
- 0.1 g
Scored on added sugar, sodium and saturated fat, with a penalty for trans fat.
[F] Added vitamins or minerals meaningfully lift this product's nutrition grade. Without them it would score lower.
A closer look
Does the label add up?
The noodle cake is refined wheat flour (maida, 78.4%), refined palm oil, iodised salt and wheat gluten, held together with thickeners, three phosphate stabilisers and acidity regulators. The masala mix adds dehydrated vegetables, spices (17.6% of the mix), sugar, hydrolysed vegetable protein, maltodextrin and flavour enhancers.
Per 100 g: 459 kcal, 20.1 g fat of which 10.7 g saturated, 1247 mg sodium, 1.6 g added sugar and 9 g protein. Calcium (128.5 mg), iron (2.6 mg), vitamin C (6 mg) and folic acid (17.7 mcg) are declared and are added rather than natural.
Ingredients to watch
- SodiumConcern
1247 mg per 100 g. Most of it arrives in one bowl, which matters most for anyone watching blood pressure.
- Palm oil (fried noodle cake)Concern
20.1 g fat per 100 g, and more than half of it (10.7 g) is saturated.
- Phosphate stabilisers (INS 339, 450, 452)Worth watching
Three phosphate salts help texture. Each is permitted, but together they add to a long additive list.
- Added nutrientsFine
Calcium, iron, vitamin C and folic acid are genuinely present. They are useful, just not a reason to eat more of it.
Common misconceptions
Myth: "Added vegetables make it a vegetable dish"
The vegetables sit in a small masala sachet. They add colour and texture, not a serving of vegetables.
Myth: "Fortified means nutritious"
Fortification lifts a few numbers. It does not change the refined flour, the palm oil or the salt that make up most of the pack.
How often, and how
- Healthy adultsOccasionally, with half the masala and extra vegetables
- ChildrenA treat, not a regular tiffin
- High blood pressureLimit; use a quarter of the masala or skip
Smarter ways to eat it
Use half the masala
Add your own onion, tomato, chilli and lemon. You keep the flavour and cut the sodium sharply.
Bulk it up
Stir in an egg, paneer or sprouts and a handful of real vegetables to turn a snack into a fuller meal.
Common questions
Is Yippee Magic Masala Instant Noodles with Added Veggies healthy?
