Sodium Benzoate
A preservative for acidic foods and drinks. With vitamin C it can form small amounts of benzene under heat and light.
Sodium benzoate stops bacteria, yeast and mould in acidic foods such as soft drinks, pickles, sauces and juices.
What the research says
It was included in the 2007 Southampton study mixtures linked to hyperactivity in children. Combined with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), it can form small amounts of benzene, especially when drinks are stored warm or in light.
